According to Dr. Fumbi Chima, although constructing numerous data centers all over Africa is necessary to create the infrastructure for local businesses to use this technology, this will not amount to much if we do not have enough qualified people to work at these data centers, secure enough quality of data (to ensure its validity), and provide consistent power to enable us to create an indigenous form of Artificial Intelligence. When it comes to Africa’s data center explosion, there’s a certain buzz about it. We hear about the new facilities being announced in places like Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and billions of dollars in investment going into building facilities. It feels exhilarating, and it feels like momentum, but once again if I’m being honest, building a data center feels like building a highway with no vehicles, no drivers for the vehicles, and no clear driving direction map.

I’ve spent my time sitting in boardrooms where infrastructure development is seen as the end goal. Think again! Infrastructure is just the starting point and only part of a much larger puzzle.
