Gone are the days when technology leaders focused only on “keeping the lights on” by making sure systems were operational and providing email service. There are still some cases of technology leaders being required to act in this way; however, this approach feels obsolete.

As technology has changed, so too have expectations for technology.  Board members are no longer impressed with just uptime; they want to see how IT is creating tangible business value through increasing revenue, retaining customers, or improving their speed to market with quantifiable dollar value.

A recent conversation with a CFO made this very clear.  “If IT can’t demonstrate their contribution to the bottom line, they are considered just overhead.” This is a hard statement, yet not terribly far from the reality of the situation.
