Today, autonomous AI is more than just a theory, it is transforming business practices. Organizations trust that their dedicated AI agents can negotiate with suppliers, authorize mundane transactions, prepare reports, and even make the right operational decisions while the human interference is kept to a minimum. Given that the technology has proven to be worth the trust, the question of who is liable for inevitable mistakes needs to be answered. The concept of accountability does not seem to be simple enough.

Autonomous Robots are not Liable in Legal Terms

The fact that autonomous AI agents can perform complicated tasks does not mean that they qualify as legal entities. They remain incapable of bearing legal liability similar to a firm or a manager. However, this does not mean that with autonomous AI technologies the accountability is borne by the machines.

Imagine a situation where an AI agent approved a supplier with some regulatory violations in the past. In this case, the company cannot say that β€œit was us, the AI who made the decision.” Regulators as well as clients will be asking whether appropriate oversight, governance, and control were present.

Governance Must be Changed

Before turning to the deployment of AI systems companies have to define their accountability structure. They need to decide who approves proposals, monitors the performance of the systems, and intervenes if results seem suspicious.

Although automation may help a company achieve better working results, the need for human control remains indispensable.

Innocence Is Not Enough

Many businesses throughout the world want to experience the benefits of AI systems such as higher productivity and faster decision making. However, the process of implementing and managing the technologies needs to be strictly controlled.

Before turning to the introduction of an AI system boards and executive teams should consider the responsible approach to incorporating it.
